Walkthrough
- You begin the game in Candlekeep, just outside the inn. Enter the inn and buy whatever weapons and armor your character can equip from Winthrop the innkeeper.
- Speak to the tutors throughout Candlekeep to learn how to play the game. Jondalar on the east side of the keep will give you some battle training and from Obe in the cellars you can practice fighting with a group.
- Talk to the people of Candlekeep. Many will ask you to fetch things for them. You can gain some experience points for these minor quests.
- Both Shark in the Priest's quarters and Carbos in the Bunkhouse will try to kill you. They are simple enemies to defeat, though.
- When you are ready to leave, speak to Gorion on the steps of the library. The two of you will leave Candlekeep.
- Just outside Candlekeep, you will be ambushed and Gorion will sacrifice his life so that you can escape.
- You begin this chapter on the Candlekeep Coastway, just east of Candlekeep. Imoen will join you and will suggest you check out Gorion's body.
- Go north to the ambush site and read the scroll found on Gorion's body.
- Travel east to the Coastway. A strange old man will approach you and ask you some questions about yourself.
- Go north to the Friendly Arm Inn. A mage named Tarnesh will attack you on the steps of the inn. Search his body after you have defeated him to find some spell scrolls and a bounty notice.
- Inside the inn you will meet Jaheira and Khalid, friends of Gorion, who will offer to join your party. They will suggest you go south to investigate the current iron crisis.
- Return south and enter the town of Beregost. There are many interesting people, places, and subquests here. Visit Taerom Fuiruim in the smithy, Feldepost's Inn, and the wizard in High Hedge to the west to find magical items for sell. You will probably not be able to afford very much yet, though.
- Continue following the Coastway south to Nashkell.
- This chapter begins in Nashkel. A bounty hunter will attack you in the inn.
- Speak to the mayor of Nashkel, Berrum Ghastkill, and he will ask you to investigate the troubles in the mines southeast of the town.
- Go southeast to the Nashkel Mines and speak to Emerson in the mine pit in the northwest corner of the area. He will give you permission to enter the mines.
- Speak to the guards blocking the mine entrance and they will let you in.
- Speak to the miners in the mine to learn more details about what is happening.
- Descend to the fourth level. Beware of the traps on the third level, though. Have a thief detect and disarm them.
- Defeat the evil cleric Molahey on the forth level. Take his Holy Symbol from his body.
- Look in the chest in Molahey's room to find two letters from Molahey's superior, Tazok.
- Leave the mines and return to Nashkel. Speak to Berrum Ghastkill in front of the temple to receive a reward.
- Go north to Beregost and enter Feldepost's Inn on the west side of the town. Confront Tranzig on the second floor. Either kill him and take a letter off his body which will indicate a meeting place for the bandits or allow him to surrender and he will tell you the location of the Bandit Camp.
- Enter the Woods of the Sharp Teeth to the northeast and let yourself get caught by either Teven in Larswood or Raiken in Peldvale. Tell them that you want to join them and they will take you to the Bandit Camp.
- Tazok will interview you and once you have impressed him, he will grant you access to the camp.
- Wander the camp and speak to the bandits to learn more of the situation.
- Enter Tazok's tent on the east side of the camp. Four of Tazok's men will attack you.
- Once you've defeated Tazok's men, speak to their prisoner Endar Sai and he will tell you that the Iron Throne is behind the bandits and the iron shortage.
- Disarm the chest in the tent and look inside to find two documents from Tazok's boss. These letters will indicate that Cloakwood is your next destination.
- Travel to the new Cloakwood area next to the Friendly Arm Inn that appeared on your map. Move through all four Cloakwood areas until you reach the mine area.
- Enter the palisade from the southwest corner and defeat Drasus and his party.
- Continue to the bailey in the northeast and enter the mine from inside.
- In the northeast corner of the first level, one of the miners will tell you to get the key for the plug from Davaeorn so that the mines can be flooded.
- Defeat Hareishan on the second level and open the door to the prison in the room behind him. Give Rill 100 gold so that he can free the other slaves. Yeslick the dwarf will offer to join your party and will tell you to flood the mines to get rid of the Iron Throne.
- Continue down into the mine. The stairs to the fourth level are in the far southern end of the third level.
- Davaeorn will attack you in the middle of the fourth level. He is a powerful mage so the battle may be difficult. A Dispel Magic spell will be useful against him.
- Once you have defeated him, take the key and read the three letters found on his body.
- Enter the lift on the fourth level of the Cloakwood Mine to return to the first level.
- Give the key to the miner in the northeast corner of the level and he will flood the mines.
- Backtrack through Cloakwood forest and travel to the city of Baldur's Gate.
- On Wyrm's Crossing, Scar will offer you a subquest and then will go to the Flaming Fist Compound in Southwest Baldur's Gate. Once you have completed the first one, he will offer you a second. After the second subquest, Scar will take you to Duke Eltan who will ask you to investigate the Iron Throne. You can refuse the two quests and Scar will take you Duke Eltan right away once you visit him in the Flaming Fist Compound.
- Enter the Iron Throne building in South Baldur's Gate. Either kill or bribe the guards that confont you.
- On the third floor you will meet Emisary Tar who is on her way to the fifth floor to speak to the Iron Throne leaders.
- On the fourth floor, Destus Gurn will mistake you for Emisary Tar and will invite you to go to the fifth floor to discuss the current issues with some leaders of the Iron Throne.
- Threaten the merchants in the back rooms of the fourth floor and they will tell you that the leader of the Iron Throne in Baldur's Gate, Reiltar, is at a conference in Candlekeep.
- You may ascend to the fifth floor and fight Zhalimar and his party if you wish, but it will be a tough battle and is purely optional.
- Return to Duke Eltan in the Flaming Fist Compound and report that any incriminating evidence would be with Rieltar in Candlekeep. He will give you a valuable book so that you may enter the keep.
- You begin this chapter in front of Candlekeep. Give the book you received from Duke Eltan to the guard and you will enter Candlekeep.
- Enter the library in the center of the keep.
- On the second floor you will meet Koveras, who will claim to be a friend of Gorion. He will offer you a magic ring and will encourage you to attack Rieltar while he is at his weakest.
- You will find Rieltar and his associates in the north room on the third floor. You can talk to them but you shouldn't attack them because you have no concrete proof of their wrong-doing and they are in sancuary in the library. For this same reason they will not attack you either unless you provoke them.
- Piato will great you on the fifth floor and will tell you to visit Gorion's old room.
- Enter Gorion's room, the third along the southwest wall. Inside the chest you will find a letter to you from Gorion. In the letter he writes that your true father is Bhaal, the former god of murder.
- Once you reach the sixth floor, a gatewarden will arrest you for the murder of Rieltar (even if you didn't kill him).
- Ulraunt will find you guilty and will sentence you to be sent to Baldur's Gate where you are to be executed. Tethtoril will appear and will teleport you to the catacombs beneath the library.
- In the catacombs you will find that many of your old friends are dopplegangers. Even dopplegangers of Elminster, Gorion, and Tethtoril will approach your party, but don't believe their lies.
- In the third catacomb area you will be attacked by Prat and his party.
- Cast a Protection From Petrification spell to defeat the two greater basilisks who guard the catacombs' exit.
- Just before you leave, Diarmid will tell you to meet up with Sarevok in the Iron Throne in Baldur's Gate, thinking you are Prat.
- You will be just outside the walls of Candlekeep when you leave the catacombs. Journey back to Baldur's Gate.
- Speak to the people of Baldur's Gate to learn what has happened in the city since you were gone. If you are arrested, a fellow prisoner named Neb will show you a secret exit.
- Speak to Delthyr by Sorcerous Sundries in East Baldur's Gate. He represents the harpers and will tell you that Scar has been assassinated and that Duke Eltan is critically ill. He will warn you that you are wanted by the Flaming Fist and will suggest you to break into the Iron Throne citadel to learn more.
- Speak to Tamoko who is also by Sorcerous Sundries. She will tell you that Eltan's healer is not to be trusted and will ask you to meet her in front of the Flaming Fist Compound.
- Meet Tamoko in front of the Flaming Fist Compound in Southwest Baldur's Gate and she will make you promise to defeat Sarevok's plans but to spare his life. She will then tell you that Duke Entar's assassins are in the undercellar and Sarevok's mistress (Tamoko's rival) is in the Iron Throne Citadel.
- Storm into the Flaming Fist Compound and defeat Benjy and his mercenaries. Confront Rashad, Duke Eltan's healer, on the second floor and he will change into a greater doppleganger.
- Pick up Duke Eltan and take him to the harbormaster in South Baldur's Gate.
- Enter the Iron Throne Citadel in South Baldur's Gate. You will find that Sarevok has left the Iron Throne in shambles and many of its members are deserting. Confront Cythandria, Sarevok's lover, on the fifth floor. Defeat her to receive two letters from Sarevok's assassins and Sarevok's own diary.
- Go down into the sewers below Baldur's Gate and find an entrance into the Undercellar. Defeat the assassins Slyth and Krystin. On Slyth's body you will find a letter from Sarevok to Slyth and an invitation to the Duchal Palace.
- Show the invitations to Bill in front of the Duchal Palace in North Baldur's Gate and then enter the palace.
- The other dukes will be in the process of installing Sarekov as a new duke when your party enters the palace. The noblemen there will turn into dopplegangers and attack your party and the dukes.
- After the battle, show Belt and Liia either the letters from Sarevok to the assassin Slyth or Sarekov's diary. Sarevok will be enraged and attack everyone. After you have faught him for a while he will flee.
- Belt will teleport your party to the Thieves Guild. Climb down the stairs and enter the maze.
- Find your way through the maze and be careful of hidden traps. At the end of the maze you will find Winski, Sarevok's mentor who has been left for dead.
- Once you leave the maze, you will be in the Undercity. A group mercenaries hired by the Iron Throne head offices will confront your party. The leader of the mercenaries, Rahvim, will attack your party with Arrows of Detonation, making him a difficult enemy.
- Tamoko will approach your party once again in front of the ancient temple. It is possible to avoid killing her.
- Inside the temple Sarevok and the last of his faithful followers will attack your party. This will be a very difficult battle. You can make it easier by casting area damage spells or wands before you see the enemies. Watch out for the traps in the room, especially the ones in the skull in the center of the room. Defeat Sarevok and the game will be over.
